Username Generator for Instagram, TikTok and X
A username generator turns a word or your name into handle ideas you can copy. This one checks every idea against the length and character rules of the network you pick, from Instagram and TikTok to X, YouTube, Twitch and Discord, and it tells you which rules a network has never published. It cannot tell you whether a name is free: type each idea into the network's own username field to find out.

We cannot check whether a name is free. How to check on each network
How to use this username generator
- Pick the network first. The rules differ, and the ideas are built to fit the one you choose.
- Type a word, your name or a hobby, or leave the box empty. Choose a style, and switch off numbers, underscores or periods if you do not want them.
- Read the first 24 ideas, press New ideas for a different set or More ideas to add to the list, and press Copy on the ones you like.
- Type your favorites into the network's own username field. That is the only place that can tell you whether a name is free.
Username rules by network
Every idea above is checked against this table before it is shown. Where a network's own help page states a figure, the table says so. Where the page is silent, the table says that too, and the figure we use is marked as our working limit, never presented as the network's. Only four of the seven networks state a full length range: TikTok, X, YouTube and Discord. Instagram, Threads and Twitch leave at least one end of the range unstated.
| Network | Length | What the network says | What it leaves out, and what we check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram username | 3 to 30Our working limits |

| TikTok username | 2 to 24Stated by the network |

| X username | 5 to 15Stated by the network |

| YouTube handle | 3 to 30Stated by the network |

| Twitch username | 4 to 25Minimum stated, maximum ours |

Letters, numbers, underscores and periods are the building blocks on most of these networks. We never start or end an idea with an underscore or a period and never put two in a row, even where a network allows it, because those names are harder to read, say and type. Every idea is lowercase, since Discord forces lowercase and YouTube says handles are not case sensitive.
How this username generator builds and checks ideas
The ideas come from our own word lists, grouped into seven styles, and a handful of combination rules: your word with a suffix, a prefix or a describing word, two words joined, your word with a number, or a made-up name built from sounds. A seeded random choice picks the rule and the words, which is why the same input always shows the same first set. There is no model behind it and nothing is sent anywhere.
Each candidate then goes through the rule for your network: the length, the allowed characters, where a separator may sit, and any word the network blocks. X, for example, says a username cannot contain the word Admin, and YouTube says a handle cannot look like a phone number, so those are refused. A candidate that fails any check is thrown away and replaced, so what you see has passed all of them.
Usernames are a different field from the rest of your profile. Styled text from a font generator belongs in a bio or caption, not in a handle, because a handle takes plain letters and numbers. The limits on posts and bios are a separate set, and the character counter counts them the way each network does.
How to check whether a username is free
We cannot check availability, and we would rather say so than guess. A name that passes the rules above can still belong to someone else, and the network is the only source that knows. Here is where each one tells you, from the help pages we read.
- Instagram. Type the name into the Username field under Edit profile. Instagram says the change takes effect at once if the name is available.
- TikTok. Enter it under Edit profile, Username. TikTok says a name that is taken, or held by a suspended or deactivated account, cannot be used.
- X. Enter it in the username field when you sign up or change your username. X says a name can also be unavailable because a suspended or deactivated account holds it, so a profile that does not load is not proof it is free.
- YouTube. Choose it when you create or change your handle. YouTube says a handle must not already be in use and may refuse one for other reasons.
- Threads. Edit your profile in the Threads app. To keep the same username on Instagram and Threads, the two profiles need to be in the same Meta Account.
- Twitch. Edit the username in Profile Settings. Twitch shows a green checkmark when the name is available, and you confirm your password to save it.
- Discord. Set it in your account settings. Discord says usernames are unique and suggests adding numbers, underscores or periods when yours is taken.
- Any network. Check each network you want in its own username field. A name free on one is often taken on another.
One word, three networks: a worked example
The same word and style give different ideas once the rules differ. Here is luna in the Aesthetic style with numbers, underscores and periods allowed. X takes no periods and stops at 15 characters, so its ideas are shorter and plainer. Twitch also gets no periods, as a working choice, because its help pages name no character set. Instagram takes both separators and has the most room.
| Network | Rule used | First six ideas |
|---|---|---|
| 3 to 30 characters | luna42 hazyluna365 littleluna lunapetal luna.101 cloudyluna | |
| X | 5 to 15 characters | lunadiary goldenluna sunlitluna paleluna luna21 mistyluna12 |
| Twitch | 4 to 25 characters | ivory_luna lunapastelbloom lunadiary faded_luna dustyluna lunagarden |
Which style to choose
A style sets the word lists the ideas draw from. Pick the one that matches how you want to be found, not only how it looks.
- Clean. Plain, readable words that are easy to say aloud and spell.
- Aesthetic. Soft, dreamy words: light, weather, flowers, fabric and slow mornings.
- Gamer. Punchy, competitive words for a gamertag, a Twitch channel or a Discord name.
- Fantasy. Old-world names: kingdoms, weather, beasts and roles from a story you have not written yet.
- Professional. Brand and business handles: short, spellable and easy to put on a card.
- Cute. Small, friendly words: snacks, baby animals, buttons and cuddly things.
- Short. Six letters or fewer where the network allows, built from sounds and clipped words.
How to pick a username you will keep
- Say it out loud. If you have to spell it twice, shorten it or drop the number.
- Use the same name on every network where you can. People who find you in one place then find you in the others, and a single link can carry the rest: see link in bio.
- Keep letters that look alike apart. A name that mixes the letter l, the number 1 and a capital I is hard to read aloud and to type.
- Put your keyword in the display name and the bio, not only in the handle. X says a display name can be up to 50 characters, and Discord display names can hold capitals, spaces and emoji. The bio generator helps with that part.
- Leave other people's brands out of it. A name that passes the rules is still not cleared, and Twitch, for one, says it can reclaim a name that infringes a trademark.
Where these facts come from
Every rule in the table above comes from one of these pages, read on the date shown. The word lists and the combination rules are ours.
- What can you do if an Instagram username is already claimed, but seems inactive, Instagram Help Center. Read . That full stops (periods), numbers, underscores and abbreviations are ways to build a username that is not in use. The page gives no length limit.
- How to change your Instagram profile information, Instagram Help Center. Read . That a changed username takes effect immediately when it is available, and that followers may be told.
- Changing your username, TikTok Support. Read . The 2 to 24 character range, letters, numbers, underscores and periods only, no period at the end, and one change every 30 days.
- Help with username registration, X Help Center. Read . The 15 character limit, letters, numbers and underscores only, the blocked words, and that a suspended or deactivated account can hold a name that looks free.
- How to change your X username, X Help Center. Read . That a username must be more than 4 characters long and up to 15, with letters, numbers and underscores only.
- Learn about YouTube handles, YouTube Help. Read . The 3 to 30 character range, the allowed characters, no separator at the start or end, and that a handle cannot look like a URL or a phone number.
- About username changes between Threads and Instagram, Instagram Help Center. Read . That a Threads username can be the same as the Instagram one or differ, and that matching keeps some features working. It states no Threads character rules.
- Username Transfer Policy, Twitch Help. Read . The 4 character minimum, the green checkmark that shows a name is available, one change every 60 days, and that Twitch can reclaim a name that infringes a trademark.
- New Usernames & Display Names, Discord Support. Read . The 2 to 32 character range, lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods only, no two periods in a row, and that usernames are unique.
Frequently asked questions
What is a username generator?
A tool that builds username ideas from words and a few combination rules. This one runs in your browser, checks every idea against the network you pick (length, characters and the position rules that network publishes) and puts a copy button on each. It does not check whether a name is already taken.
Does the username generator check if a name is available?
No. We cannot see which names are taken on Instagram, TikTok, X or any other network, so a name that passes our checks can still be in use. Type it into the username field when you sign up or edit your profile and the network tells you there. X and TikTok both say a suspended or deactivated account can hold a name, so a profile that does not load is not proof the name is free.
How long can a username be?
The limit is set by each network, and not every network states one. X allows up to 15 characters, TikTok 2 to 24, YouTube 3 to 30 and Discord 2 to 32, and Twitch asks for at least 4. Instagram's Help Center states no limit that we could find, so for Instagram and Threads we keep ideas between 3 and 30 characters and label that as our working limit.
Which characters can a username use?
Letters and numbers on every network, plus a few separators. X takes underscores only. TikTok takes underscores and periods, but a period cannot be last. Discord takes lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and not two periods in a row. YouTube takes underscores, hyphens and periods, but not at the start or end. Instagram names periods and underscores as ways to build a username.
Can I use the same username on every network?
You can try, but it may already be taken on one of them. The Any network setting builds names to the strictest limits in the table, 5 to 15 characters of lowercase letters, numbers and underscores, so each idea fits every network we list. On Threads, the username can match your Instagram one or differ, and Instagram says matching keeps some features working.
What can I do if the username I want is taken?
Change it a little. X's help center suggests an underscore before or after the name, for example @lindsay_ or @_lindsay, and Instagram's suggests adding full stops, numbers, underscores or an abbreviation. Type your word into the generator and press More ideas to see variants that already fit the network's rules.
Is a username that passes the rules safe to use?
Passing the rules means the network will accept the characters. It does not clear a name against someone else's brand. Twitch says it can reclaim a username that infringes a trademark or is used to impersonate someone, and Instagram has a help article on reporting usernames that use a trademark. Leave brand names that are not yours out of the word box.
Is the username generator free, and is what I type uploaded?
It is free with no signup. It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded or stored. The ideas come from our own word lists and combination rules, not from a model.
