What the feed actually shows
- 101
- Visible chars
- 334
- Behind “more”
- 41
- Hook length
- 0
- Hashtags
Cut off after 101 characters because it hit the 3-line limit on desktop.
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
Where LinkedIn cuts your post off
LinkedIn truncates on two budgets at once, and whichever runs out first wins. That second rule is the one that catches people: a post well under the character count still collapses if it opens with two short lines and a blank line between them.
Desktop
210
characters, or 3 lines, before “see more”.
Mobile
140
characters, or 3 lines. Most of your audience is here.
How to use the visible window
- Put the whole idea in the first line. The opening line is the only part guaranteed to be read. If it needs the second line to make sense, it is too long.
- Do not spend line breaks early. Three lines is the ceiling. Two blank lines before your hook lands means the hook is already hidden.
- Write to 140, not 210. Optimise for the mobile cutoff and the desktop one takes care of itself.
- Leave a reason to expand. A post that resolves inside the visible window gives nobody a reason to click “see more”, and the expand is a ranking signal.
Frequently asked questions
Where exactly does LinkedIn cut off a post?
On desktop LinkedIn shows about 210 characters before the "see more" link. On mobile it shows about 140. Either way it also stops at 3 lines, so a post with two early line breaks gets collapsed well before it reaches the character limit.
Is this tool free, and do I need an account?
It is free with no signup and no card. The preview runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded or stored anywhere.
Why does my post look different on mobile?
Mobile has a narrower column and a shorter truncation budget, roughly 140 characters against 210 on desktop. Most LinkedIn traffic is mobile, so the mobile view is the one worth optimising for.
What is the maximum length of a LinkedIn post?
A LinkedIn post accepts up to 3,000 characters. That is the hard publishing limit, which is different from the truncation point where the feed adds "see more".
Where these numbers come from
A preview is only as good as its cut-off point, so here is ours and when we took it.
| Surface | Cuts at | Or lines | Expand label |
|---|---|---|---|
| desktop | 210 characters | 3 | …see more |
| mobile | 140 characters | 3 | …see more |
We measured these against LinkedIn’s live web and mobile clients on 7 August 2026 and have not changed them since. Whichever limit lands first wins, which is why a short post with four line breaks can be cut before a long one with none. The desktop and mobile numbers are genuinely different, so a post that survives one can be cut on the other.
Platforms move these without announcing it. If your own feed disagrees with what you see here, your feed is right, and we would rather hear about it than have you find out on a post that mattered.
Preview is the last step, not the first
You previewed a post you still had to write. Content Drifter writes it in your brand voice, keeps it inside the LinkedIn truncation fold, picks the posting time from your own engagement history and publishes it for you.
