Cut off after 46 characters because it hit the 2-line limit on desktop.
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
The first 125 characters are the whole caption
Instagram collapses a caption after about 125 characters. Everything past that is behind a tap, and most of the feed never taps. The caption limit is 2,200 characters, but the part that does the work is the opening line.
Visible caption
125
characters before “… more”.
Caption limit
2,200
characters accepted per post.
Hashtags
30
maximum per post. 5-10 performs best.
Writing captions that survive the cut
- Front-load the payoff. Say what the post is about before the truncation, not after it.
- Keep hashtags out of the opener. A hashtag block at the top spends your visible window on tags nobody reads.
- Match caption to image. The image stops the scroll; the caption is what converts the stop into a save or a share.
- Ask one question. Comments are weighted heavily, and a single specific question outperforms a generic “thoughts?”.
Frequently asked questions
How much of an Instagram caption is visible in the feed?
Instagram shows roughly the first 125 characters of a caption before it collapses behind "... more". Everything after that is only read by people who tap to expand.
Is this Instagram preview free?
Yes. No signup, no card, no limit on how many captions you preview. It runs in your browser, so nothing you type leaves your device.
How many characters can an Instagram caption be?
An Instagram caption accepts up to 2,200 characters and up to 30 hashtags. The 125-character point is where it visually truncates, not where it stops accepting text.
Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?
Either works for reach. Putting them in the caption means they eat into the visible 125 characters, so if your hook needs that room, move them to the first comment.
Where these numbers come from
A preview is only as good as its cut-off point, so here is ours and when we took it.
| Surface | Cuts at | Or lines | Expand label |
|---|---|---|---|
| desktop | 125 characters | 2 | … more |
| mobile | 125 characters | 2 | … more |
We measured these against Instagram’s live web and mobile clients on 7 August 2026 and have not changed them since. Whichever limit lands first wins, which is why a short post with four line breaks can be cut before a long one with none. Instagram cuts at the same point on both surfaces, so there is no desktop and mobile split to design around here.
Platforms move these without announcing it. If your own feed disagrees with what you see here, your feed is right, and we would rather hear about it than have you find out on a post that mattered.
Preview is the last step, not the first
You previewed a post you still had to write. Content Drifter writes it in your brand voice, designs the visual, picks the posting time from your own engagement history and publishes it to Instagram for you.
