AI social media manager: what an AI agent can safely run today

By Tayyab, Founder · Published

An AI social media manager is software that does the recurring work of a social media manager: it writes posts in your voice, fills a calendar and queues posts for publishing. An AI agent can safely draft, schedule as drafts and, with your confirmation, publish; it should not approve its own work, answer your community or set strategy alone. With Content Drifter, an agent in Claude or ChatGPT saves drafts, and nothing goes live until the post has passed Final Review and the publish call carries confirm set to true. Plans run from Lite at $15/mo to Agency at $199/mo; the average US social media manager salary on Indeed is $65,676 a year, about $5,473 a month (checked October 14, 2026).

What an AI agent can safely automate today

Safe here means the agent can do the job and still cannot put something in front of your audience that you have not seen. These are the 4 jobs our connector gives an agent in Claude or ChatGPT, and the gate on each.

What an AI agent can do through the Content Drifter connector, and the gate on each job
JobWhat the agent doesThe gateTool
Read the Brand Kit, the calendar and the connected networksYes, all of it, so a draft starts from your voice and your queue.Read-only tools; the agent runs as you, on your plan and workspace.list_workspaces, list_upcoming_posts, list_platform_connections, get_brand_kit
Write a postYes: one platform-native post with hashtags and an image prompt, in your Brand Kit voice.Saves nothing. Counts toward your monthly post allowance like any post written in the app.generate_post
Fill the calendarYes: it saves each post to a day and time as a draft.A draft unless the call asks for "scheduled", and a queued post still needs Final Review in the app before it can auto-publish.schedule_post
Publish one post nowOnly when you say so.The call must carry confirm set to true and the post must already have passed Final Review; otherwise nothing is published.publish_now

What stays with a person, and is not on that server at all:

  • Delete or edit a post, read analytics, make images or video: there is no tool for them on this server.
  • Approve its own work. Final Review is a step in the app that a person completes.
  • Answer comments and direct messages, handle a crisis, or decide to pause a campaign: those stay with a person.
  • Shoot original photos and video, build partnerships, or review posts for regulated industries.

The approval gates we enforce

An agent is only as safe as the steps it cannot skip. These are enforced by the server and the app, not by an instruction to the assistant, so a wrong guess from the model still stops at the gate.

  • schedule_post saves a draft unless you ask for "scheduled", and a queued post still needs Final Review in the app before it can auto-publish.
  • publish_now does nothing unless the call carries confirm set to true, and it refuses a post that has not passed Final Review.
  • There is no delete tool, no analytics tool and no image or video tool on this server.
  • Every call runs as the signed-in person: their plan, their workspace and their connected networks, with the same limits as the app (100 reads and 30 writes per 60 seconds for your account).
  • Final Review checks character limits, media sizes, hashtag rules and required fields for the network before anything goes live, and blocks a post that would fail at the platform.

How Final Review works is on the approval workflow page, and the stage-by-stage version of the whole process is in our social media workflow.

Time and cost against a human

One figure on this page is about a human hire, and it has a source: Indeed reports an average US social media manager salary of $65,676 a year, from 3.2k salaries taken from job postings on Indeed in the past 36 months (updated October 5, 2026; we read it on October 14, 2026). Indeed: social media manager salaries in the United States. That is about $5,473 a month in salary alone, before benefits, taxes and tools.

Content Drifter plans: monthly price, post drafts per month, cost per post and whether the agent connector is included
PlanPricePost drafts a monthPer post, full allowanceAgent connectorShare of one month's salary
Free$08$0Not included0%
Lite$15/mo60$0.25Included0.3%
Starter$30/mo150$0.20Included0.5%
Pro$60/mo300$0.20Included1.1%
Business$120/mo600$0.20Included2.2%
Agency$199/mo1000$0.20Included3.6%

The paid plans cost 0.3% to 3.6% of one month of that salary. The comparison has limits: a plan drafts and schedules posts, while a salaried manager also owns strategy, community replies, shoots and reporting, so the two are not the same job. Post drafts is the plan's monthly allowance of post drafts; the per-post price assumes you use all of it.

On time, we budget about 4 hours of hands-on work a week for five posts across the full process (see the workflow stage budget). That is a planning figure, not a measurement, and we have not measured how much of it an agent removes, so we do not publish a saving. For the cases where a person or an agency is the right call, read AI versus hiring a social media manager and AI versus hiring an agency.

Run it from Claude or ChatGPT

Both assistants add Content Drifter as a custom connector with one address and a sign-in: https://www.contentdrifter.com/api/mcp. It is included on Lite and up and runs on your own plan, workspace and connected networks. Step-by-step setup is on the Claude page and the ChatGPT page; developers can also use the local package on the MCP server page.

Three prompts that map onto the tools above:

  • “Write three X posts about our launch week in my brand voice and save each one as a draft for next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9am.” Uses generate_post, schedule_post. The posts land as drafts on your calendar. Open the link in the reply to review each one.
  • “What is on my Content Drifter calendar for the next 7 days? Point out any day with nothing planned.” Uses list_upcoming_posts.
  • “Publish the draft you just saved right now.” Uses publish_now. The assistant must ask you first, and the post must have passed Final Review in the app. Otherwise nothing is published.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI social media manager?

An AI social media manager is software that handles the recurring work of managing social accounts: writing posts in your voice, filling a content calendar and publishing on a schedule. Content Drifter does that for 9 networks, and an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT can drive it through our connector.

Can an AI agent run my social media on its own?

Not safely, and ours is built so it cannot. An agent can write posts and save them as drafts, but a queued post still needs Final Review in the app, and publish_now only runs when the call carries confirm set to true. There is no delete tool, and community replies stay with you.

Is it safe to let an AI agent publish to my accounts?

It is safe when the agent cannot publish without a person's confirmation. The connector runs as your account under your plan, with 100 reads and 30 writes per 60 seconds for your account, and each call is logged. Anything it writes lands as a draft first, and publishing needs both Final Review and an explicit confirm.

How much does an AI social media manager cost?

Content Drifter plans run from Lite at $15/mo to Agency at $199/mo, and the Free plan costs nothing but does not include the agent connector. For comparison, Indeed reports an average US social media manager salary of $65,676 a year, about $5,473 a month before benefits and tools (3.2k salaries taken from job postings on Indeed in the past 36 months, updated October 5, 2026).

Will an AI social media manager replace a human one?

No, it replaces the recurring drafting and scheduling, not the judgement. A person still owns strategy, community replies, original photo and video, partnerships and compliance review. We budget about 4 hours of hands-on work a week for five posts, and we have not measured how much of that an agent removes, so we do not publish a time saving.

Which plan do I need to use it from Claude or ChatGPT?

The connector is included on Lite and up, starting at Lite for $15/mo. The Free plan does not include it. There is no separate connector fee, and writing a post counts toward your plan's monthly post allowance.

What can the agent not do?

It has 7 tools: 4 that read and 3 that write. It cannot delete or edit posts, read analytics, make images or video, change your Brand Kit or connect a network, and it cannot approve a post for you.
