TikTok Photo Mode: Size, Limits and What to Do When It Does Not Work

By Tayyab, Founder · Published

TikTok photo mode posts 35 photos or fewer as a swipeable set. Photos should be JPEG and WebP, up to 20 MB each and 1080p at most, and the first photo is the cover. It is a different format from a video slideshow, which is one MP4 or MOV file of up to 3 minutes.

These are TikTok's own limits for photo posts, read from the limits we check publishing against. TikTok can change them, and the social media limits page lists every network's limits in one place. For a photo that fills the screen, the carousel size guide has the safe zones.

Photo mode or a video slideshow?

A photo post lets people swipe at their own pace and takes up to 35 photos. A video slideshow is one video that plays on its own, so you set the pace, can open it with a title card, and can schedule it like any other TikTok video. Here are the video limits, for comparison.

To make a slideshow from photos, use the free TikTok slideshow maker. It runs in your browser, needs no account and adds no watermark. It makes a video, not a photo-mode post.

When photo mode does not work: a checklist

Go down this list before anything else. Most failed photo posts break one of these limits.

  • More than 35 photosA photo post takes 35 at most. Split a longer set into two posts, or cut the weakest photos.
  • A photo over 20 MBResize or compress it. A phone photo exported at full size is often the one that is too large.
  • A file that is not JPEG and WebPHEIC photos from an iPhone and PNG files are the usual ones. Export them as JPEG first.
  • A photo above 1080pResize it down to 1080p. A vertical 1080 x 1920 photo is the shape that fills the screen.
  • A title that is too longKeep the title to 90 characters. The caption is separate, and is where the longer text goes.

If every limit is met and photo mode is still missing from your app, update TikTok and check your account in the app. We cannot see TikTok's account-level settings, so that part is yours to check.

Scheduling photos to TikTok

Content Drifter schedules TikTok video posts, and TikTok photo-mode posts are not something we publish yet. TikTok videos are delivered to your TikTok inbox as a draft, and the confirmation says: "Sent to your TikTok inbox. Open TikTok to add a sound, set who can see it, and post."

The practical route today is to make your photos into a video and schedule that. The AI Video Maker does it from a post inside Content Drifter, and the TikTok growth playbook covers how TikTok distributes what you post.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size should TikTok photo mode photos be?

Each photo can be up to 20 MB, in JPEG and WebP, at 1080p at most. A vertical 1080 x 1920 photo (9:16) fills the screen, and keeping the important part near the middle keeps it clear of the caption and buttons.

How many photos can a TikTok photo post have?

From 1 to 35. The first photo is the cover, so lead with the one that should stop the scroll.

Why is TikTok photo mode not working?

Check the limits first: no more than 35 photos, JPEG and WebP files only, 20 MB each, 1080p at most and a title of 90 characters or fewer. If all of that is fine and the option is still missing, update the TikTok app and look at your account in the app: we cannot see TikTok's account-level settings from here.

Can I schedule a TikTok photo post with Content Drifter?

Not yet. Content Drifter schedules TikTok video posts, and a TikTok photo-mode post is not something we publish. To get a set of photos onto TikTok on a schedule, make them into a video slideshow with the free TikTok slideshow maker and schedule that. TikTok videos are delivered to your TikTok inbox as a draft, and the confirmation says: "Sent to your TikTok inbox. Open TikTok to add a sound, set who can see it, and post."

Is a TikTok slideshow the same as photo mode?

No. Photo mode is a set of photos people swipe through, with no video file. A slideshow made as a video is one MP4 or MOV file of 3 seconds to 3 minutes that plays on its own. Our slideshow tool makes the video kind, up to 20 photos.
