TikTok publishes no single recommended size for organic video, so the size to use is one that clears every minimum it does state: 1080 × 1920 pixels at 9:16, which is also the size Content Drifter publishes at. Its Help Center says a video uploaded in TikTok Studio must be 720 × 1280 or higher, its developer docs accept 360 to 4096 pixels on each side as MP4, WebM or MOV up to 4 GB, and photo mode takes JPEG or WebP photos up to 1080p and 20 MB each, with up to 35 photos in one post. We checked every number against TikTok's own pages on October 15, 2026.

Video: what TikTok states, and the size we use
TikTok states limits in three places and no single recommended size. Its Help Center says a video uploaded in TikTok Studio on the web must be MP4 or WebM, 720 × 1280 or higher, up to 30 minutes and under 10 GB. Its developer docs, for apps that post through the Content Posting API, take MP4 (recommended), WebM or MOV; 360 to 4096 pixels on each side; 23 to 60 frames per second; up to 4 GB.
Its ad specs recommend vertical 9:16 at 540 × 960 pixels or more, and also list horizontal 16:9 at 960 × 540 or more and square 1:1 at 640 × 640 or more. 1080 × 1920 is a vertical 9:16 size that clears every minimum above, and it is the size Content Drifter publishes TikTok videos at.
Safe zones: TikTok gives templates, not numbers
TikTok's in-feed ad specs publish the safe zone as downloadable templates, one for each shape, and say the safe area shrinks as the ad caption gets longer and when interactive add-ons are used. TikTok's developer docs take WebP or JPEG photos, up to 1080p and 20 MB each, with up to 35 photos in a post and no stated ratio, so 1080 × 1920 (9:16) is a full-screen size inside those limits. Profile photo
TikTok says only that a profile photo must be at least 20 × 20 pixels to upload. It publishes no recommended size and no file limit for it.
TikTok mistakes to avoid
- Uploading a video under 720 × 1280 in TikTok Studio
- TikTok's Help Center says an upload in TikTok Studio has to be 720 × 1280 or higher, as MP4 or WebM. A 1080 × 1920 export clears it.
- A video under 360 or over 4096 pixels on a side
- TikTok's developer docs take 360 to 4096 pixels on each side for a video sent through its Content Posting API, so an 8K export is outside the limits, and so is a tiny preview file.
- A photo above 1080p or over 20 MB
- Photo mode is capped at 1080p and 20 MB per image. Content Drifter limits the long side to 1920 pixels and converts photos to JPEG.
- Sending an image as a TikTok post
- A TikTok post is a video. Content Drifter stops an image with "TikTok requires a video, not an image" before it reaches TikTok.
- Placing text where TikTok draws its own buttons
- TikTok prints no margins, only templates. Check your design against TikTok's template instead of guessing from another network's numbers.
