Facebook Cover Photo Size and Post Size
By Tayyab, Founder
Updated . Part of the social media image sizes guide.
A Facebook Page cover photo should be 851 × 315 pixels, ideally an sRGB JPG under 100 KB, and no smaller than 400 × 150; a personal profile cover only has to be at least 720 pixels wide. Facebook publishes no size for feed photos, so use 1200 × 630 for a shared link and 1080 × 1350 (4:5), the size Content Drifter publishes at, for a photo post. We checked every number against Facebook's and Meta's own pages on October 15, 2026.

Check your image for Facebook
Choose an image and see, for each format, whether it fits, will be cropped and where, or fails because it is too small, too large or the wrong type. Then crop it to the exact size and download it. Your image is read in this browser and is never uploaded.

All Facebook image sizes
| Format | Size to design at | Ratio | Limits | Safe zone and notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Page cover photoSource 1
2.70:1
At 2.4:1, the shape phones show, about 756 px of the 851 px width stays in view. Worked out by us from numbers the network states. Facebook states 851 × 315 as the size that loads fastest (an sRGB JPG under 100 KB), at least 400 × 150, a 16:9 shape on computers and 2.4:1 on phones. Those do not describe one shape, so keep the key content in the middle. The profile picture covers about 40 px of the left of the cover on phones, and a PNG is better for a logo or text.

For a personal profile Facebook says only that the cover image has to be at least 720 px wide, and it publishes no recommended size or ratio.

Facebook crops it to a circle and shows it at 176 × 176 px on computers, 196 × 196 on smartphones and 36 × 36 on most feature phones.

Facebook publishes no feed photo size. Its Graph API takes JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF or TIFF up to 10 MB (a PNG over 1 MB can look pixelated) and resizes the image itself. Content Drifter compresses a file to 4 MB before it sends it, because larger uploads failed intermittently in our own publishing in May 2026.
Link preview imageSource 4
1.91:1
For the og:image of a page shared to Facebook. Under 600 × 315 the preview shows small, and under 200 × 200 it does not show.
StorySource 5
The network publishes no size. This is the size Content Drifter publishes at. | 9:16 |
Keep text and logos clear of 14% at the top and 20% at the bottom. Stated by the network. Facebook publishes no organic Story size. Meta's ad guide for Facebook Stories asks for 9:16 and for roughly the top 14% and the bottom 20% to stay free of text and logos. 1080 × 1920 is the full-screen size Content Drifter publishes Stories at.
Reel (video)VideoSource 6
16:9 to 9:16
Safe zone not published by the network. Facebook's Reels API takes 9:16 at 1080 × 1920, 540 × 960 at the least, 24 to 60 frames per second, and states no safe zone for organic Reels.

Facebook safe zones
Text and logos near an edge can be covered by the network's own buttons or cropped on some screens. These are the margins Facebook states, drawn on the real shape.

Cover photo: Facebook's own page gives three shapes
Facebook's Help Center says a Page cover photo loads fastest as an sRGB JPG that is 851 × 315 pixels and under 100 KB, must be at least 400 × 150, and shows at 16:9 on computers and 2.4:1 on phones. Those three do not describe one shape: 851 × 315 is 2.70:1.
So design the 851 × 315 file and keep everything that matters in the middle 756 pixels of its width, the part a 2.4:1 phone view keeps (our arithmetic from Facebook's figures). The profile picture also covers about 40 pixels of the left of the cover on a phone, and a PNG is better than a JPG for a logo or text.
If another guide says 820 × 312, it does not match Facebook's Help Center as checked on October 15, 2026.
Profile picture
Facebook asks for 320 × 320 pixels for a Page's profile picture and crops it to a circle. It is shown at 176 × 176 pixels on computers, 196 × 196 on smartphones and 36 × 36 on most feature phones. For a personal profile Facebook publishes no size at all.
Photo posts and link previews
Facebook's Help Center publishes no feed photo size. Its Graph API takes JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF or TIFF up to 10 MB and resizes the image itself; a PNG over 1 MB can look pixelated. Content Drifter publishes photo posts at 1080 × 1350 and compresses a file to 4 MB first, because larger uploads failed intermittently in our own publishing in May 2026.
A link you share uses the page's og:image. Meta asks for at least 1200 × 630 pixels, at 1.91:1, with 600 × 315 as the least that shows as a large preview; a file over 8 MB or under 200 × 200 pixels does not show.
Stories and Reels
Facebook's Reels API takes 9:16 at 1080 × 1920 pixels, at least 540 × 960, at 24 to 60 frames per second. A Story has no organic size in the Help Center; Meta's ad guide for Facebook Stories asks for 9:16 and for roughly the top 14% and the bottom 20% to stay free of text and logos.
Facebook mistakes to avoid
- Uploading a photo over about 4 MB through an API
- Facebook documents 10 MB, but in our own publishing in May 2026 larger photos intermittently failed with "Please reduce the amount of data you're asking for". Content Drifter compresses to 4 MB first.
- Putting the subject of a cover behind the profile picture
- On a phone the profile picture covers about 40 pixels of the cover, and the cover is left-aligned. Keep faces and text towards the middle.
- Sending a Story smaller than 540 × 960
- 540 × 960 pixels is the least Facebook takes for a vertical video, and Content Drifter refuses a Story below it.
- A link preview image under 600 × 315
- Under 600 × 315 the preview shows small, and under 200 × 200 it does not show.
- More than 10 photos in one post
- Content Drifter stops an eleventh image with "Facebook accepts at most 10 images per post" before it reaches Facebook.
- Using a logo as a JPG cover
- Facebook says a PNG gives a better result for a profile picture or cover that carries a logo or text.

Publish to Facebook at the right size, every time
Image Studio draws one image design at the right shape for every network you publish to, so you stop resizing by hand. For Facebook it designs at 1080 × 1350 and compresses a file to 4 MB before it publishes, so uploads do not fail on size.
