Pinterest Pin Size and Aspect Ratio
By Tayyab, Founder
Updated . Part of the social media image sizes guide.
The best Pinterest Pin size is 1000 × 1500 pixels, a 2:3 aspect ratio, and Pinterest warns that a Pin taller than 2:3 might get cut off in feeds. Images can be BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF or WebP up to 20 MB on the web, and for a full-screen video Pinterest recommends 1080 × 1920 (9:16). We checked every number against Pinterest's own Help pages on October 15, 2026.

Check your image for Pinterest
Choose an image and see, for each format, whether it fits, will be cropped and where, or fails because it is too small, too large or the wrong type. Then crop it to the exact size and download it. Your image is read in this browser and is never uploaded.

Standard PinSources 1, 2
2:3 or wider Pinterest says a Pin taller than 2:3 might get cut off in feeds.
Pinterest recommends 2:3, or 1000 × 1500 (ad specs, for an image Pin that can also earn organic impressions), and its Pin specs list BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WebP up to 20 MB on the web. The ad specs list PNG or JPEG at up to 20 MB from a computer and 32 MB in the app. Use sRGB: a custom colour profile can shift colours.
Full-screen PinSources 1, 2
9:16
Margins of 270 px at the top, 790 px at the bottom, 65 px on the left and 195 px on the right of a 1080 × 1920 canvas. Stated by the network. Pinterest recommends 9:16, or 1080 × 1920, for a full-bleed video (Pin specs) and for the full-bleed images and videos of Idea ads, which can also run as organic Pins (ad specs). Its paid-only Showcase and Quiz ads ask for 1000 × 1500 there instead. The Pin spec page lists these margins for image and video Pins without naming a canvas; they only make sense on a full-screen Pin, so we apply them to 1080 × 1920. The ad spec page lists 440 px at the bottom for Idea ads.
Business profile coverSource 3
16:9
Only a business account can add a profile cover. Pinterest asks for at least 800 × 450 and recommends a horizontal 16:9 image.
| Profile photoSources 4, 5 | Not published by the network | No ratio rule published |
Pinterest's Help Center explains how to change the profile photo and a board cover, and publishes no size, ratio or file limit for either.

Pinterest safe zones
Text and logos near an edge can be covered by the network's own buttons or cropped on some screens. These are the margins Pinterest states, drawn on the real shape.
Full-screen Pin, 1080 × 1920
Margins of 270 px at the top, 790 px at the bottom, 65 px on the left and 195 px on the right of a 1080 × 1920 canvas.
Stated by the network. The shaded margins are where text and logos can be covered or cropped.
The standard Pin: 2:3
Pinterest's ad specs recommend 2:3, which is 1000 × 1500 pixels, for an image Pin that can run as an ad or earn organic impressions, and say Pins with an aspect ratio greater than 2:3 might get cut off in people's feeds. In practice that means 2:3 is the tallest shape worth making. Pinterest names only the taller Pins as a risk, and a wider Pin at the same width is shorter, so it takes less room.
Pinterest's Pin spec page lists BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WebP up to 20 MB on the web, and its ad specs list PNG or JPEG up to 20 MB from a computer and 32 MB in the app. Use sRGB: Pinterest says a custom colour profile can shift the colours of a published Pin.
Full-screen Pins and where to keep text
Pinterest recommends 9:16, or 1080 × 1920 pixels, for a full-bleed video in its Pin specs, and for the full-bleed images and videos of Idea ads, which can also run as organic Pins. Its paid-only Showcase and Quiz ads ask for 1000 × 1500 there instead. The Pin spec page asks you to keep text and other elements inside margins of 270 pixels at the top, 65 on the left, 195 on the right and 790 at the bottom for image and video Pins, without naming a canvas; they only make sense on a full-screen Pin, so we apply them to 1080 × 1920.
The ad spec page lists a smaller bottom margin, 440 pixels, for Idea ads. The organic Pin page's 790 is the cautious figure.
Profile cover, profile photo and board covers
Only a business account can add a profile cover. Pinterest asks for at least 800 × 450 pixels and recommends a horizontal 16:9 image. For the profile photo and for board covers Pinterest publishes no size, ratio or file limit.
What Content Drifter does with a Pin
Every Pin needs an image or video and a board. Content Drifter designs Pins at 2:3 (1000 × 1500), publishes a Pin from one image at the shape it has, without cropping or padding it, and compresses a file to 8 MB first, because larger files failed on Pinterest's side.
Pinterest mistakes to avoid
- Making Pins taller than 2:3
- Pinterest says a Pin taller than 2:3 might be cut off in feeds. 1000 × 1500 is the recommended size for that reason.
- Publishing a Pin without a board
- Every Pin needs a board. Content Drifter will not send one without it, because Pinterest refuses a Pin with no board_id.
- Putting text in the bottom of a full-screen Pin
- Pinterest's margin is 790 pixels at the bottom of a 1080 × 1920 Pin, where the title and buttons sit.
- A file in a custom colour profile
- Pinterest does not support custom colour profiles and says colours can shift. Export in sRGB.
- Uploading a huge original
- Pinterest lists 20 MB on the web, but larger files failed on Pinterest's side in our own publishing, so Content Drifter compresses a file to 8 MB.
