Threads Image Size and Aspect Ratio

By Tayyab, Founder

Updated . Part of the social media image sizes guide.

Threads publishes limits rather than a recommended size: images can be JPEG or PNG up to 8 MB, 320 to 1440 pixels wide, at any ratio up to 10:1. A square 1080 × 1080 or a 4:5 portrait 1080 × 1350 sits well inside those limits, and a carousel takes 2 to 20 images. We checked every number against Meta's Threads developer documentation on October 15, 2026.

Check your image for Threads

Choose an image and see, for each format, whether it fits, will be cropped and where, or fails because it is too small, too large or the wrong type. Then crop it to the exact size and download it. Your image is read in this browser and is never uploaded.

No image chosen yet. The Threads formats are listed below the checker.

The network publishes a range, not a size. These are common sizes inside it.

10:1 to 1:10

Threads refuses an image beyond a 10:1 ratio.

  • Resized into 320 to 1440 px wide
  • Up to 8 MB
  • JPEG or PNG

Threads publishes limits, not a preferred size: JPEG or PNG up to 8 MB, 320 to 1440 px wide (scaled to fit), any ratio up to 10:1, sRGB. The sizes here are common choices inside those limits.

Threads gives limits, not a preferred size

Meta's Threads API documentation lists the image rules: JPEG and PNG are the supported types, a file is 8 MB at most, the width is scaled up to 320 pixels or down to 1440, the aspect ratio limit is 10:1, and colours are converted to sRGB. It names no recommended size, which is why the table shows common sizes inside the limits and says so.

Because the ratio limit is 10:1 in either direction, Threads is the most forgiving feed for tall or wide images; almost anything you made for another network fits. The limit that bites is the file: 8 MB, in JPEG or PNG. A WebP is not on the list.

Video

Threads recommends 9:16 for video to avoid cropping or blank space. It takes MOV or MP4 up to 1920 pixels wide, 5 minutes and 1 GB, at 23 to 60 frames per second, and publishes no safe zone. 1080 × 1920 is the full-screen size.

Profile photo

Threads' Help Center explains how to change the profile picture and publishes no size, ratio or file limit for it, so we give none.

Threads mistakes to avoid

An image wider or taller than 10:1
Threads refuses it. A long vertical screenshot or a panorama past 10:1 needs cropping or splitting into a carousel.
A WebP or HEIC image
Threads lists JPEG and PNG only. Content Drifter publishes JPEG or PNG to Threads, so convert before you upload elsewhere.
A file over 8 MB
Threads allows 8 MB per image. Export a JPEG at a lower quality.
A carousel with one image
A carousel needs at least two items. Content Drifter stops a one-image carousel with "A carousel needs at least 2 images."
More than 20 items
The Threads limit is 20. Content Drifter stops the next image with "Threads accepts at most 20 images per post".
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size should a Threads image be?

Threads names no recommended size. It takes JPEG or PNG up to 8 MB, 320 to 1440 pixels wide, at any ratio up to 10:1, so 1080 × 1080 (square) and 1080 × 1350 (4:5) both work.

What is the Threads image aspect ratio limit?

10:1, in either direction. An image beyond that ratio is refused; anything inside it is accepted, from a very wide strip to a very tall one, and the width is scaled to between 320 and 1440 pixels.

What is the Threads image file size limit?

8 MB per image, as JPEG or PNG. Wider images are scaled down to 1440 pixels and narrower ones up to 320.

How many images can a Threads post have?

A post can hold one image, or a carousel of 2 to 20 images and videos, each image held to the same limits as a single photo.

What size is a Threads video?

Threads recommends 9:16 and takes MOV or MP4 up to 1920 pixels wide, 5 minutes and 1 GB.

What size is a Threads profile picture?

Threads does not publish one, so we give none. It publishes no size, ratio or file limit for the profile photo.

Post to Threads and every other network from one place

Image Studio draws one image design at the right shape for every network you publish to, so you stop resizing by hand. For Threads it designs a 1080 × 1080 square by default, inside every limit above.
